Habitat:
Occasional in tamarack swamp. Patchy to quite open canopy of mature Larix laricina; abundant snags due to tree mortality in past ~10-15 years. Patchy understory of Ulmus americana, Betula papyrifera, and Alnus incana. Partial shade. Firm to buoyant wet peat. Loose clumps. Maroon basal sheaths.

Associates include Carex interior, C. leptalea, Aster puniceus, Geum rivale, Senecio aureus, Mitella nuda, Cirsium muticum, Cypripedium reginae, Platanthera aquilonis, Lysimachia thyrsiflora, Ribes triste, Rhamnus alnifolia, Cornus stolonifera, Toxicodendron rydbergii.
